If you want to standout from the crowd, chameleon tint is certainly a great way of doing so. As with standard car window tints, they come with a variety of benefits but there are certain legalities that you need to be made aware of.

Whether you are about to install chameleon tint to your car or you are just curious, below is everything you need to learn about the latest modification trend of chameleon tinting.

What Are The Benefits?

Although a chameleon tint isn’t to everyone’s taste, the main benefit that many people would agree with is that it improves the aesthetics of the car. However, other benefits of a chameleon tint include:

  • UV protection and heat reduction inside of the car
  • Multiple shades and colours
  • Glare reduction
  • Increased security and privacy
  • Glass is held together by the tint if it becomes shattered

Is Chameleon Tint Legal In The UK?

The most popular question that we get asked regarding chameleon tints upon your windscreen is whether or not its road legal in the UK. The short answer is yes but only if it allows 75% visual light transmission through your windscreen.

As stated by the UK government, “The front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through”. Therefore, as long as you use a chameleon tint that allows at least 75% of light through, it is road legal.

To ensure your car is road legal before chameleon tinting your windscreen, you either want to use a film that’s guaranteed to allow 75% of light through or visit a professional to do it for you. We would recommend going to a professional because they’ll have their own window tint meter to prove that your windscreen is road legal.

As you can see in the photo above, we tested a friend’s chameleon tint with a tint meter. From the readings, you can see that it allowed 78.6% of light through the windscreen, which meant that it’s road legal in the UK.

It’s worth pointing out that many car manufacturers tint the windscreen from the factory. Therefore, you’ll need to consider the factory tint to the windscreen as well as the chameleon tint with regards to the amount of light that it allows through.

What Are The Different Colours?

A unique benefit of chameleon tint is the fact that its available in a range of colours (and shades). The most popular colours include red, blue, orange and purple but there is a whole range of colours you can choose from.

In terms of the various shades, the most popular is an aqua, sunset or cadbury finish (our favourite is the sunset) and they really make your car standout whilst remaining road legal.

How Much Does It Cost?

Applying chameleon tint to your car is no different to tinting you windows and the prices are very similar. However, the application of a tint to a windscreen is slightly more difficult and it does come at a premium price.

As an approximation, the cost to chameleon tint your windscreen by a professional varies from £100 to £300. This cost varies depending upon your location, type of car and the quality of the tint used. Of course, you can reduce the cost by installing it yourself because you can buy the film itself from as little as £10.

Conclusion

Although chameleon tint may not be to everyone’s taste, it’s currently a very popular trend. However, to avoid any issues, we strongly recommend using a professional to install it for you. This is because the tint will be confirmed as road legal, which is of course a requirement if you intend to drive on the public road. However, another factor to consider is that tinting your windscreen requires plenty of patience and its not as simple to do when compared to other car windows.
